West Coast Super Comp 2008 Recap

Horn Hysteria

One week after returning from the high altitude conditions of Top Gun Raceway 21 West Coast Super Comp racers converged on Infineon Raceway. After completing the Eastern swing that included races # 7, 8 and 9 most competitors, crew members and family were just happy to be back at sea level. Headlines were created in the desert like Dan Boscacci reaching two final rounds and catapulting himself from the 12 spot all the way to number five. Likewise, for first time winner Dan Hall, who also rocketed into the four slot after starting his weekend just outside of the top ten in the 11th position. Other news was the early departure of WCSCRC series leaders Matt Hartzell, Rick Beckstrom and Mike Gomez in all three races. What other points surprises could be in store?

Fast forward one week. The place, Infineon Raceway. The date, September 7 and the buzz around the staging lanes was will Rod Horn win the race and be crowned the 2008 West Coast Super Comp Champion. Who? Rod Horn, the 2007 Rookie of the year sat in the sixth position entering the final race of the season. Piloting his Spernak Racing Engines Ford powered Altered he quietly and methodically mowed down his opponents. Round after round and seemingly when everyone was looking the other way he marched into the final taking out series stand outs like Glenn Kern and Rick Beckstrom on his way to the Championship. It took a final round appearance coupled with a final round win to achieve what seemed impossible just a few hours earlier. With a bye run in the semi-final round he next set his sights on Dean Hall out of the Korbel Racing stables. Rod knew what he needed to do and that's exactly what he accomplished. Beating Dean Hall at both ends of the track. Rod Horn got the early jump with hi s .007 reaction time and held on to victory stopping the clocks with a 8.963 to Hall's quicker but losing 8.955. Great job to Rod and Tanner for an incredible season. This now squarely places the Bull's Eye on his back starting next season.

West Coast Super Comp would like to once again thank the racers and their families for our continued success. Special thanks to the tireless efforts of Kelly Van Popering, Sandy Boscacci and all of the Board (or is that bored) members. We look forward to another wonderful 2009 season.
